Changes in the schedule for Monday 4th:

After the Greek Night on Sunday, it was decided to start on Monday at 10 am. Please see the new schedule in the time table.

Changes in the schedule for Thursday 30th:

We will have a tutorial of Statistics from 9 to 11. Please set up a running version of the root analysis program on your laptops (https://root.cern/install/) if you would like to run the examples shown in the tutorial (although the tutorial can be followed without that). After this, we will have the Cosmology lectures, followed by a Tutorial & Open discussion session. The afternoon will be free.

Changes in the schedule for Wednesday 29th:

The excursion has been moved from Thursday to Wednesday. It will take place at 12 am, after the lecture on Introduction to Quantum Gravity by Prof. Renata Loll. The Cosmology lecture will be given on Thursday.

Student's talks schedule:

Please check the schedule given as a PDF document in the timetable, slot corresponding to the Saturday's session:

Changes in the schedule for Tuesday 28th:

The lecture on Statistics will start at 12. Between 11 and 12, Prof. Tommaso Dorigo will deliver a lecture for another workshop (Machine learning for particle physics, on and off the lattice at ECT Trento) from the main auditorioum. Our students can choose whether to have a one-hour break or to attend the talk. Please see below the title and abstract of the talk.

Differentiable programming for fundamental physics research: status and perspectives

Abstract:
Take the chain rule of differential calculus, model your system with continuous functions, add overparametrization and an effective way to navigate stochastically through the parameter space in search of an extremum of an utility function, and you have all it takes to find an optimal solution to even the hardest optimization problem. Deep learning, nowadays “differentiable programming”, is boosting our reach to previously intractable problems. I will look at the status of applications of differentiable programming in research in particle physics and related areas, and make a few observations of where we are heading.

How to arrive and Zoom links:

The workshop venue is in the Mon Repos Estate. Information on how to get there may be found in the Meeting Location subsection of the webpage http://www.physics.ntua.gr/corfu2021/qg.html

  • Zoom Connection: zoom link, or select Meeting ID: 661 3863 3172 Passcode: 599340
  • Recorded Talks: available here.

Important information:

Please note that you need to complete a required document to enter Greece. Read carefully: https://travel.gov.gr/

Please also check http://www.physics.ntua.gr/corfu2021/qg.html for important information concerning COVID-19 updates and regulations and the organization of the Training School (in particular, you will need a valid COVID vaccination/disease certificate to participate in social events).

We hope you can have a good trip to Corfu!

Welcome to the First Training School of COST Action CA18108

"Quantum gravity phenomenology in the multi-messenger approach"

This is the first of a series of Training Schools organized by the European COST Action CA18108 - “Quantum Gravity Phenomenology in the Multi-Messenger Approach”(https://qg-mm.unizar.es/), an initiative funded by the COST Association (https://www.cost.eu/), whose goal is to investigate possible signatures predicted by quantum gravity models in the observation of different cosmic messengers, such as gamma rays, neutrinos, cosmic rays and gravitational waves.

The success of this endeavor requires the close collaboration of scientists from very different backgrounds, ranging from experimentalists specialized in data collection and analyses for specific cosmic messengers, to theorists working on different quantum gravity models.

A fundamental ingredient to make such cooperation effective is to share a common language and be familiar with the tools used by the different communities. This is where the role of this school comes in as fundamental: its goal is to start training a generation of young scientists in the interdisciplinary expertise on quantum gravity theories and models and on experimental and theoretical approaches to multi-messenger astroparticle physics.

As such, the different editions of the Training School will offer lectures from experts on different facets of the scientific gear the students will acquire, including data analysis and interpretation for individual sources, the creation and analysis of joint datasets of different cosmic messengers, the interplay between quantum gravity theory modeling and phenomenological predictions.

The school is aimed at Master and PhD students, as well as early-career postdocs.

It will be possible to attend in person in Corfu (preferred mode) or to follow the school online. The lectures will be recorded and the lecture notes will later be published so that it will be possible to use them as preliminary material for the remaining Training Schools (two are foreseen), that will build on the present one to more advanced topics.

The school will be followed by the COST CA18108 Second Annual conference. Those interested in participating should register on the Conference website.
