WG3 meeting: combining multi-instrument data

Europe/Madrid
Description
Online meeting of WG3 (gamma rays) on combining multi-instrument gamma-ray data in a single LIV study.

Aims of the meeting:
  1. Discuss the possibility of combining data from different gamma-ray experiments into a joint LIV analysis, as was proposed in arXiv:2201.02087 (mostly interesting for experimentalists in gamma rays),
  2. Trigger a discussion on developing multi-messenger observations and LIV data analysis methods (possibly of interest to the whole Action).

Meeting ID: 987 2934 9608
Passcode: 136560

Meeting will be recorded for interested colleagues who are not able to attend.

Below you can find more details about the background and aims of the meeting.

Members of Cherenkov gamma-ray telescope experiments H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS enacted a joint task force to combine all their relevant data to constrain the Quantum Gravity energy scale. This is the first time such cooperation (informally known as the LIV Consortium) was established for such a purpose.

The Consortium developed an analysis method based on the likelihood maximisation, to combine the data and provide a common limit. The method was tested on simulations of recorded data sets for a gamma-ray burst, three flaring active galactic nuclei and two pulsars. Details are reported in a recently published paper https://arxiv.org/abs/2201.02087.

Currently, we are preparing to start working on the second part of the paper, in which the method will be used with available data from H.E.S.S., MAGIC and VERITAS, in order to produce a combined limit on QG energy scale.
We would very much like to use data from other gamma-ray experiments, which is the main motivation for organising this meeting. Therefore, if you participate in a gamma-ray experiment and are interested in joining this effort, please join the meeting.

Second motivation for calling the meeting is to use the work done by the LIV Consortium as a starting point for discussing strategies for multi-messenger observations and developing data analysis methods to measure/constrain QG energy level.

  • Tomislav gave an introduction to the meeting, pointing out two motivations for the meeting:
    • Extending multi-instrument collaborations to test LIV on gamma rays
    • Starting discussion on multi-messenger observations and LIV analyis
  • Julien presented what was done so far and presented motivations and results of the first paper of the LIV HMV group (arXiv:2201.02087)
  • Sami provided a more technical description of the method and what kind of input would be needed.

We had discussion between presentations. If you are interested in different parts, here is the timeline:

  • Introductory presentation by Tomislav: 0:00:00 - 0:12:30
  • LIV HMV group and paper 1 by Julien: 0:13:00 - 0:48:00
  • Discussion: 0:48:00 - 1:33:00
  • LIV code by Sami: 1:33:30 - 1:46:30
  • Discussion: 1:46:30 - 2:19:30
