Description
COSINUS is a cryogenic direct detection experiment that searches for dark matter. Its aim is to measure phonon signals from nuclear recoils in sodium iodide (NaI) crystals using transition-edge sensors (TES). NaI is incompatible with standard TES fabrication, preventing TES-based phonon readout on this target material. To overcome this limitation, we have developed and tested the remoTES with NaI, which decouples the fabrication of the sensor from the absorber. The TES is produced on a carrier and couples to the target via a gold bond. Our ongoing R&D demonstrates that the remoTES achieves an energy resolution comparable to that of conventional TES implementations. Achieving this level of performance with standard absorber materials demonstrates the broad applicability of the concept, opening up the possibility of using highly sensitive TES readout with materials that were previously incompatible.
