Description
CRESST (Cryogenic Rare Event Search with Superconducting Thermometers) is a cryogenic dark matter experiment operated at the Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in Italy.
The experiment aims to detect dark matter–nucleus interactions using scintillating calorimeters equipped with transition edge sensors (TESs) to measure phonon signals at millikelvin temperatures, complemented by the simultaneous detection of scintillation light.
CRESST continues its efforts to further lower the energy threshold, a task made increasingly challenging by a low-energy excess — an exponential rise in event rate at low energies, seen also by comparable experiments, whose origin remains unknown.
One hypothesis attributes this excess to stress-induced signals at the interface between the TES and the crystal.
To investigate this, the CRESST collaboration developed a new detector module with not only one but two TESs, which may allow discrimination between such events and genuine particle events.
This poster presents this new module design and the latest results obtained from its operation.
