Description
The Neutrino Elastic-Scattering Observation with NaI(Tl) (NEON) experiment is primarily designed to detect coherent elastic neutrino–nucleus scattering (CEνNS). The experiment is also being expanded to investigate dark sector particles emitted by high-energy photons from the reactor core, as well as other reactor neutrino interactions.
NEON operates at the Hanbit Nuclear Power Plant in Yeonggwang, South Korea, with six high-light-yield NaI(Tl) detectors totaling 16.7 kg of crystal mass. The experiment has been collecting data since April 2022, comprising approximately 860 days of reactor-on exposure and 223 days of reactor-off exposure.
Robust background characterization is essential for defining signals from the interactions of our interest in the experimental data. We present background modeling of the NEON dataset, including time-dependent components, and report recent progress toward searches for dark sector particles and additional neutrino-interaction channels based on this background model.
