Description
The COSINE-100 was a direct dark matter search experiment that utilized 106 kg of NaI(Tl) crystals, primarily designed to test the annual modulation signal reported by the DAMA/LIBRA collaboration. An analysis threshold of 8 photoelectrons, corresponding to 0.7 keVee, has been achieved, providing sensitivity to sub-GeV dark matter candidates. A well-motivated interaction channel is the scattering of light dark matter off electrons, typically producing sub-keV energy depositions. For dark matter candidates in the MeV mass range, the expected signals are at the tens of eV scale, requiring analyses with very low thresholds, particularly searches down to a few photoelectrons in the COSINE-100 crystals' PMTs. We present a search for dark matter–electron scattering in COSINE-100 using a 2.86-year dataset, along with prospects for a low threshold analysis extending down to the single photoelectron level. Furthermore, we discuss the projected sensitivity of the upgraded COSINE-100U experiment.
